Abstract

A significant proportion of people living with HIV/AIDS are aged 15-24. The aim of this study is to investigate adolescent's perception of risk of AIDS and their use of condoms. The study draws on focus group discussions with adolescents in two districts in KwaZulu-Natal. The study found that awareness of AIDS is high. Most adolescents had heard of AIDS. However, there were some common misconceptions about AIDS. African adolescents are more likely to perceive themselves at risk than other race groups. Perception of risk is imp01iant to promote protective behaviour. There are however many barriers to condom use. One of the major barriers to condom use is the association of condoms with lack of trust.
