Abstract
In an era marked by rapid technological advancement and shifting demands, effective career guidance has become essential for preparing learners for higher education institutions. Utilizing a case study methodology, this research pursues two primary objectives: the access and success of learners and the tensions and affordances of school university partnerships. This study explores school-university partnerships in career guidance, focusing on a collaborative initiative between a university of technology and two high schools drawing from transformational leadership theory. The study investigates how the partnership between high schools and universities can enhance access and success of learners post-matric, and the awareness of career opportunities which foster informed decision-making and bridge the gap between high school learning and post-matric learning. Drawing on qualitative data from semi-structured interviews, conducted in schools and the university of technology through school principals, Life orientation teachers and university staff members, the research highlights key strategies such as teacher empowerment programs, parental support and involvement, universities as inspiration to learners, career expos, curriculum alignment, and master classes through university alumni. Findings reveal that sustained partnerships not only empower learners with relevant career information but also cultivate a sense of purpose and direction leading to success. The study concludes by offering recommendations for policy makers, universities, and schools to strengthen collaboration as a means of promoting equitable access to university, career development and increase the success of learners once they have completed their studies.
