Abstract
Soil erosion remains a widespread environmental challenge that threatens sustainability, food security, agricultural production, and human habitats in developing countries. It particularly affects rural areas, where communities rely heavily on agriculture for their livelihoods. To address this issue, it is essential to consider local and indigenous knowledge systems (IKS) in rural communities as part of soil conservation and erosion prevention strategies. Ensuring the value of IKS in agricultural development must remain a key priority for policymakers. This study aimed to assess the role of IKS and community involvement in soil conservation efforts in rural areas, focusing on the effectiveness of local knowledge in managing soil erosion problems in the Eastern Cape Province. Research was conducted in selected rural villages across four local municipalities within the Alfred Nzo District Municipality (ANDM). A mixed-methods approach, including unstructured face-to-face interviews, questionnaires, field observations, and Google Earth imagery, was used to collect data on IKS, agricultural land abandonment, and their role in soil erosion and conservation management. Findings indicate that agricultural land abandonment is prevalent in the majority of rural areas within ANDM, contributing significantly to soil erosion. Many farmers attribute land abandonment and soil erosion to the historical injustices caused by the Natives Land Act No. 27 of 1913 (NLA) and the Bantu Authorities Act No. 68 of 1951 (BAA). In summary, farmers argued that these laws facilitated (intentionally or unintentionally) conditions that (1) led to infrastructure and property vandalism, (2) displaced black farmers from agricultural activities, and (3) confined black rural villages to institutional poverty. This legacy has made it particularly challenging for small-scale black rural farmers to adopt sustainable agricultural practices, exacerbating soil erosion and threatening food security. The majority of farmers still rely on indigenous techniques for soil conservation and land management, such as contour intervals, tree and grass planting, stone walls, terrace cultivation, fallow/ridge planting, mulching, and crop rotation. While farmers generally praised these conservation methods, they expressed frustration that the lingering effects of the BAA continue to hinder their ability to live sustainably. Furthermore, the community spirit that once supported conservation initiatives has been eroded due to the NLA and BAA. Farmers also noted minimal involvement from youth—both men and women—in agriculture, with the ageing of the farming population being a significant concern. The study suggests that local knowledge and IKS practices, such as contouring, crop rotation, mulching, intercropping, and the use of vegetation cover and organic matter, remain relevant for soil conservation, food production, and security in the rural villages of ANDM. However, some farmers are unaware of the critical importance of these practices. Overall, the study highlights that rural communities possess valuable knowledge for preventing soil erosion and promoting soil conservation, which, if integrated with scientific knowledge, can help address soil erosion challenges in these areas.
