The development of Port of Durban as a container hub for Southern Hemisphere.

Abstract

The development of Durban Harbour into a major container hub port in the Southern Hemisphere provides a number of opportunities to improve the trade in the region and globally. This paper will discuss the future of Durban Harbour by answering four main questions, including evaluating its location on the key routes of trade, and the presence of the inhibitors and investment opportunities, proposing remedies to its development, and analysing the economic effects. The study adopted a qualitative approach, involving the use of in-depth interviews with the stakeholders, thorough literature reviews, and the overview of the available economic data. The results indicate that the strategic position of the Durban Harbour is an important asset that puts it at the centre of international trade routes. Nevertheless, infrastructure constraints (depth of berths and outdated logistics) are the limiting factors that presently do not allow it to realise its potential. The research points to the major prospects of investing in the infrastructure improvement and the advancement of technology. These limitations can only be overcome through strategic investments in deepening berths, expanding terminal capacities and the adopting new digital technologies. The economic review shows the potential that the development of Durban Harbour can have at various levels, namely in terms of the creation of many jobs, the growth of trade volume, and an improvement in international trade ties. These benefits, however, cannot be attained without proper planning and strategic investments to have inclusive and sustainable growth. The paper ends with policy recommendations to the policymakers, the port authorities, and industry stakeholders. These involve prioritising infrastructural investments, becoming more digitised, promoting economic and strategic planning, incorporating sustainability aspects, and also involving stakeholders via strong partnerships. The implementation of these suggestions can make Durban Harbour one of the major container ports to facilitate economic success and strengthen its presence in the international shipping business.
