Abstract

This thesis catalogues and contextualises the South African contemporary ceramics collected during 1984 – 2009 at the William Humphreys Art Gallery, Kimberley, South Africa. The study contextualises this museum’s motivations for acquisitions of contemporary South African ceramics during this period, describes the original motivations for collecting as well as subsequent historical developments up to 2009 in evaluating various ceramic media of the contemporary ceramic collection. The ceramic media includes unfired clay, raku, smoke fired, earthenware, stoneware, porcelain, bone china and paper clay.
