Abstract
Abstract This study reports on the investigation of the role of a Total Quality Management system (TQM) in the Beier Envirotec textile manufacturing organization. The study focused on employees and their role in implementing effective TQM systems. The study looked at various factors, which affected employees and the limitations they had to deal with in implementing TQM systems. The study looked at elements such as teamwork, communication, training and development, leadership, and motivation.
These are key elements, which are essential for the effective implementation of a TQM system. The study employed a qualitative research method. The method analysed data directly in the fieldwork through observations, in depth, open ended interviews, and written documents. Qualitative researchers enquire and study real world settings inductively to generate narrative descriptions in the formulation of case studies (Wyk, 2009: 11). The study also explained the constructive worldview towards an approach to qualitative research.
The study was conducted on the Beier Envirotec site, with the acquiescence of the organization and the Business School. The participants who took part in the study were or to the organization.
The findings of the study and recommendations have been sent to the organization. One of the overall main findings was the lack of integration between departments as they operate in isolation which then hinders the proper implementation of TQM in the organization.
